About the show

Portland-based Pendulum Dance Theatre has been bringing aerial arts and contemporary circus to the local landscape for a decade. Recently rechristened Pendulum Aerial Arts to better represent their unique performance brand, the company is looking to the future with their new production High Art: A Surreal Portrait of the Soul, to be presented August 19-22 in partnership with the Portland Art Museum.

Told through Pendulum’s signature aerial work, High Art takes the audience through the cycle of life using canvas and paint as metaphors for how our personalities and interactions are shaped. Each of the show’s eight acts are inspired by a work of fine art from a 20th century master. Echoing the human and artistic need to add layers without sacrificing clarity and authenticity, High Art offers a revealing look into the nuanced depths of the soul.

To rise to the challenge of interpreting visual art in the physical medium of contemporary aerial performance, Pendulum has brought in some of the big guns of the arts world to give the company’s locally-based performers fresh insight and inspiration.

The original score for High Art is being contributed by New York chanteuse Sasha Lazard and world renowned drummer, Ya’el, with contributions from cello prodigy David Eggar. Pendulum also created original aerial equipment and commissioned choreography from long-time collaborating artists across North America and Europe.

At the start of 2010, Pendulum entered into intensive workshops with Alixa Sutton, choreographer of the “Mystic Pixies” contortion act, and Christian Fitzharris, an actor and clown. Both Fitzharris and the Mystic Pixies have toured North America with Cirque du Soleil’s “Kooza.” Fitzharris was also co-creator of Kooza’s clown acts.

High Art builds on Pendulum Director Suzanne Kenney’s reputation for creating bold, sophisticated and daring multidisciplinary performance work. For Kenney, reaching out to globe-trotting artists like singer Lazard and clown Fitzharris has always been a cornerstone of how Pendulum grows as a company.

“What makes Pendulum unique is the diversity of our artists and our collaborations. Everyone has a different artistic sensibility, and how someone is going to interpret [the work] is an amazing process. My whole thing is really about telling a story, it’s not just presenting circus acts, and by working with [someone like Christian] who specializes in character development and story arc it’s really going to be exciting and let people show their talent and their natural creativity. I love to be able to let people do that. My whole perception of what it means to be an artistic director has evolved so much through
these collaborations.”

:: About Our Musicians ::

Sasha Lazard

Sasha Lazard (New York) is a classically trained soprano who pioneered an exciting and unique electronica/trip-hop/world music sound by fusing classical art songs, Russian folk tunes and opera arias with contemporary beats. Sasha performs all over the world using percussion, electric cello, keyboards, guest DJ’s and renowned guest musicians.

In 2002, after first hearing Sasha’s debut record, The Myth of Red, Suzanne Kenney, artistic director of Pendulum Aerial Arts became ecstatic about the discovery as she had been searching for the perfect sound for her aerial choreography for more than a year! Since their first project together, Sasha and Suzanne have collaborated regularly on numerous projects.

Sasha has performed live in Pendulum’s On the Fly (2003) and Crimson Cabaret (2005); and her music has been featured in all of Pendulum’s productions since 2003.
Sasha has performed for: Bulgari, Maserati, Mikimoto, Armani, and Salvatore Ferragamo.
Her latest CD, Siren, was released on Manhattan/eMI Records. In 2007, she starred in a
national PBS special entitled Heavenly Voices. Sasha’s music placements include recent
films such as Princess Mononoke, Modigliani, Holy Smoke, Cowboys and Angels, and Kettle of Fish. Sasha has been featured in Billboard Magazine, The New York Post, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Town and Country, and has performed at The Box, Joe’s Pub, the Whitney Museum, Carnegie Hall, The New York Public Library, Shea Stadium, and the National Arts Cub.

Sasha is thrilled to be creating and performing original songs for High Art. More information on Sasha and the Myth of Red Salon.

Yael Biz

Ya'el (Los Angeles) started playing drums in New York City as a teenager while delivering pizzas. She assumes she probably wanted to play drums as a baby, but remembers seeing a drummer perform when she was around the age of five and being completely awestruck knowing right away that this was “her calling”.

Yael joined Meanstreak in 1990, while still in High School. They performed with Motörhead, Iron Maiden, King Diamond, and Anthrax. During Lollapalooza ‘93, she performed with members of Arrested Development, Alice in Chains, and Fishbone, which lead to touring with Fishbone in the U.S. for the last leg of that tour.

Since January 2005, Yael has devoted herself to independent work. During the Miller Concert Series in 2006, she connected with bass player and multiple Grammy winning producer Colin Wolfe. They collaborated on a side project called The Creins. She came together with Suzanne Kenney and Pendulum Aerial Arts in 2009 as part of her collaboration, the Love Project, which also includes Sasha Lazard, Dave Eggar, and producer Nik Chinboukas.

Dave Eggar

Dave Eggar (New York) is a critically acclaimed musician. He has performed throughout the world as a solo cellist and pianist. His work is a mix of musical genres that allow the romantic voice of the cello to sing while fusing his classical background with world music, jazz and ambient rock. Recent engagements included gigs at Carnegie Hall, The Lincoln Center Festival, London’s Barbican Center Concert Hall, the JVC Jazz Festival, and the Hollywood Bowl. A virtuoso of many styles, Dave has performed and recorded with artists in numerous genres including the Who, Michael Brecker, Evanescence, Josh Groban, Coldplay, Dave Sanborn and Trans-Siberian Orchestra to name a few. As a founding member of the FLUX quartet, Eggar has premiered over 100 works of contemporary music. Dave is a graduate of Harvard University and the Julliard School’s Doctoral Program. His list of awards and accomplishments includes accolades from Time Magazine, ASCAP, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Geraldine Dodge Foundation and the Leonard Bernstein Foundation for his work in contemporary music. In 1997, he was awarded SONY Records “Elevated Standards” prize for his accomplishments in the field of classical music. He is also a Co-Founder of The Myth of Red Salon Series with Sasha Lazard and Emily Olin. His latest release Left of Blue is an interphase with the multiple aspects and genre’s of Eggar‘s experiences throughout his live performance career.
