Suzanne Kenney, Artistic Director Suzanne Kenney (Artistic & Executive Director) A true Creative Heart, Suzanne is internationally recognized as a pioneer in the aerial arts movement in the United States. She is known for evocative duet work with her partner Luis Torres, innovations in aerial choreography & aerial apparatus. The company has blossomed due to her commitment to artistic collaboration with top artists that share her passion for both performance and education. Ms. Kenney also heads up an international agency “Pendulum Entertainment” booking top artists working in Contemporary Circus around the globe for special events and galas. Her work has helped pave the way to the vibrant circus arts scene in Portland today. Before founding Pendulum, Ms. Kenney co-founded the first aerial dance company in Portland, Aero/Betty in 1996. In the last decade she has choreographed and produced 16 public performances and introduced hundreds of budding artists to the intoxicating world of aerial arts through Pendulum’s premiere education program. Through her artistic collaborations she has trained with Fred Deb (France), Fabio Dorea (Brazil), Nicole Pearson (England), and Tanya Burka (Canada) to name a few. Monika Ell (Company Member, Head Coach) returns to Pendulum for the 2009-2011 season. He began his athletic and performing career at age 6 and graduated from the Arts and Communication Magnet Academy, where he worked with Dance West for 3 years. Pursuing a career in circus arts with Pendulum, he trained in apparatus’ such as the trapeze, aerial silk, hand loops, hammock, and the aerial hoop. In 2007, MoNika became a company member and coach in the pre-professional program. He is passionate about his art and loves sharing his knowledge with others who have an open mind and an open heart.

Sarah Hardy (Company Member) Sarah joins Pendulum’s core company for the 2010-2012 seasons having completed Pendulum’s two-year Apprentice program. Sarah embodies a true multi-disciplinary artist with exquisite lines, flexibility and theatricality in her work. Sarah starred in Pendulum’s “High Art” where she performed on straps, contortion, hoop and invented apparatus. Her role in High Art was the culmination of her two years of intense training with coaches from around the globe. Pendulum is thrilled to continue to work with her for two more seasons while she completes her degree in theatre at PSU.

Shell Stachowicz (Company Member) is excited to join Pendulum for the 2010-2012 season after 6 years as a professional ballerina. Before transitioning to aerialist, Ms. Stachowicz danced professionally with Ballethnic Dance Company, Indiana Ballet Theatre, as well as other professional ballet companies, musicals, and films. Shell has danced in celebration of Maya Angelou's 80th birthday. She is originally from Houston, TX, and has toured extensively throughout the United States and Russia.

   

Supatchaya (Goy) Suvan (Company Member, Coach) is an aerialist with a diverse background in physical education, circus arts, and dance. She began her career at age 7 with training and performing in Thai classical dance. Training on the flying trapeze with Club Med in 2003 ignited her passion for the aerial arts. Her training in aerial silks with the Trix circus in Gold coast of Australia has led her to perform around the world . Before joining the circus, Goy was a fitness instructor and personal trainer. Goy has performed in Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Australia. She returns to Pendulum in the autumn of 2011 for a year-long residency.

Luis Torres (Company Member) began his artistic career at the age of seven, competing in ice skating competitions. He began to study gymnastics and dance shortly after. In 2002, he moved to Portland, OR to join Pendulum Dance Theater, and performed with the company for two years. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue opportunities in the entertainment industry in 2004, working as a producer and stage manager at famous Circus Disco and Arena Cafe. After being trained by producers at the legendary Cherokee Studios, Luis is now producing music. He rejoined Pendulum Dance Theater in 2008. Luis is half of Duo L&S with Pendulum's Artistic Director Suzanne Kenney. His specialties include aerial partner work, aerial silks, and a unique, highly entertaining roller-skating fan act.

Josie Oleson has been training with Pendulum since 1999. Josie has been in every youth performance produced by Pendulum, was a founding member of the youth ensemble ‘The Pendulum Flyers’, and, last year, became the youngest artist ever to be taken as apprentice.

   
maddie Madeleine Knox started training with Pendulum in 2007 in their recreational program. She was drawn to Pendulum because she admired the performers’ ability to do such amazing feats of strength with such ease and dangerous tricks without breaking a sweat. She continues to pursue aerial because she loves that it is such an interesting and unique art form that continues to amaze her.
   
nikki Nikki Unwin was a part of San Diego's Fern Street Circus before joining Pendulum. While in Fern Street Circus she focused on static trapeze, juggling skills and aerial hoop. When she was told that her family was moving out of state, she decided to continue furthering her aerial acrobatic abilities. She started classes in October of 2008 and has loved every minute of it. She looks forward to her continued training in aerial silks, trapeze, hoop and contortion with the Pendulum company members.
 

::Guest Artists for 2011-2012 ::

   

Andrew Adams (Chicago, IL) started his circus training with Vermont's Circus Smirkus from 1991-1998 where he was trained by Russian coaches in Chinese pole and straps. After graduating from Bates College with a BA in Theater in 1999 he moved to Chicago to perform with The Midnight Circus. Here he began working on a duo straps act with his future wife Erika Gilfether. Over the next 10 years they worked in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, England, with Circus Flora in St. Louis, Pendulum Aerial Arts in Portland, OR and Teatro Zinzanni in Seattle and San Francisco.Andrew has been coaching and creating choreograghy for Pendulum since 2005. Andrew is serving as the company's technical advisor for their touring production of High Art and will be coming to Portland in January to collaborate on the show in Salem, OR.

   

Tanya Burka (Vancouver, Canada) is a professional circus performer based out of Vancouver, BC. A 2006 graduate of Montreal's world-renowned National Circus School, she specializes in aerial disciplines and acrobatic contortion. On aerial silks and hoop, she has performed across North America and Asia for live stage and TV productions, corporate and private events, product launches, and more. Recent credits include Newfoundland's Wonderbolt Circus, Cirque du Soleil, and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies. She performed exclusively with Pendulum Aerial Arts between 2007-2008 and continues her work with the company as a choreographer and artistic consultant.

   

Tsengee Byambadorj (Seattle, Washington) joins Pendulum for the 2010-2012 seasons. Tsengee began her training in contortion at the age of nine under the instruction of world renowned contortionist Norovsambuu. By age twelve Tsengee was a main act in the Mongolian National circus. After winning prizes in such events Paris music hall festival and Monte Carlo Circus festival Tsengee went on to receive great reviews from the famous Friedrichstadt Palast in Berlin and Lido in Paris. She has appeared on international top stages like the Opening program "Apollo Variety" in Dusseldorf Germany, The show "Imagine" Harrahs Hotel in Lake Tahoe USA, Bollywood Movie festival in Bombay India, and Cirque Du Demain in Paris France just to name a few. She will also be a member of the cast of the company's touring production of High Art for the 2011-2012 season and will teach during our 2012 Summer Intensive.

Martin Frenette (Berlin, Germany) was impassioned by performing arts and started intensive dance training at a very young age before specializing himself in aerial arts at Montreal’s National Circus School (Canada).These past years, he presented many different acts for various companies, such as Circus Monti (Switzerland), GOP Varieté and Chamäleon Theater (Germany). He's also been working as artistic consultant, co-director and choreographer on different projects. Martin will join the coaching staff for the 2012 Summer Intensive.

   

James Frith (Bristol, England) studied mathematics at Cambridge University before starting work in an investment bank. However, he soon decided that this was not the life for him. He then trained at Circomedia in Bristol, UK, specializing in acrobatics and trapeze. He has gone on to perform across the globe with many different acts. Highlights include the Coca-Cola Active Festival in Israel; The Ashes at Lord's Cricket Ground; Glastonbury Festival; and as part of the BP Ultimate campaign across Europe. He has also appeared in TV commercials for Hitachi and Smirnoff. Back by popular demand Jamie returned with his partner Nicole Pearson to coach Pendulum's 2 week intensive in June 2011.

   

Nicole Pearson (Bristol, England) has performed on the international stage from a young age with Circus Smirkus, Circus Flora, and the Zoppe Family Circus, among others. She was a core company member and coach with Pendulum from 2005-2007. Nicky is currently working as a freelance artist based in the UK, featured at such high-scale events as the 2007 Royal Variety Show and the Princess Diana Memorial concert, amongst many others. She recently came back to Portland to lead two-week company intensives in advanced circus skills and set new works. Nicole will be returning in June 2012 to coach Pendulum's summer intensive.

 

Anna Vigeland (Montreal, Canada) has performed from 8 to 80 feet in the air in circuses, plays, films, television, events, installations, and other projects across the world. Experience includes shows with the 7 Fingers, Cavalia, Franco Dragone Productions/RTP TV2, Lookingglass Theatre, Cirque du Soleil Special Events, Cirque Eloize Special Events, Universal Studios Japan, the Generating Company, Circus Reaction, and many others. Anna is a graduate of Montreal’s National Circus School. A longtime Pendulum collaborator, she performed in Turkey with Pendulum Entertainment, and has been in Pendulum productions NINE and Backstage. She is thrilled to be returning to this talented group for workshops in the spring of 2012.
